Chinese Goalkeeper Meltdown

“When opponents score, I’m a moron. When I make a save, I’m still a moron … I’m not Spiderman.”

The words of Wang Dalei sum up the goalkeeper’s lot pretty well. He’s made enough progress to be tracked by some of Europe’s biggest clubs and be first choice for the Chinese Under 23, so we can assume he’s been stopping shots for many a year, but eventually the thickest skin must start to feel pretty threadbare. After his team lost 3-0 to Japan in the Asian Games, he had a good old fashioned rant on his blog, calling fans “bastards”. It’s about as uncensored as Chinese media gets.

If he’s finding it tough to deal with the criticism in China, then maybe avoiding European football is no bad thing for the time being.
