A Goalscoring Goalie From League 1

I’m not sure why Scott Flinders felt the need to go up for a last minute corner against Bournemouth yesterday. His team are clear of the relegation zone and well off the pace for a place in the Playoffs, so a 2-1 defeat wouldn’t have been the end of the world. He mustn’t like losing and that’s about as good a reason as any. In the end, he got his head on the cross to score a goal that many a physical striker would be proud of to earn the Monkey Hangers a point that makes little difference to their season.

Here it is in all it’s blurry glory:

I’m delighted for him, mainly because the first thing I found in the course of my research was a facebook page dedicated to him – dedicated in the bad way. For whatever reason, someone has decided to set up a page called ‘the goal keeper for Hartlepool, scott flinders is crap’. There may have been a surge in ‘likes’ for the page after Flinders allowed a tame shot to squirm under him for Bournemouth’s second goal, but he popped up with this spectacular redemption. He’s not reached Rogerio Ceni levels, but it’s a start and at least.
